Canadian Association of Statutory Human Rights Agencies annual conference, 2010 (Newfoundland June 20-23, 2010)
Chief of the Commission and Tribunals, Alberta Human Rights Commission, Blair Mason and Director, Education and Community Services, Cassie Palamar, attended the Canadian Association of Statutory Human Rights Agencies (CASHRA) annual conference held in Newfoundland this year. "The Edge of Rights Awareness: Compliance and Adherence in the 21st Century" was the 2010 conference theme. Delegates were provided with opportunities to reflect and debate current human rights issues, with an emphasis on the impact of international human rights conventions in Canada. The Alberta Human Rights Commission is hosting the 2011 annual CASHRA conference in Calgary, Alberta from June 13 to 16. At the 2010 conference, Blair Mason thanked the organizers of the 2010 conference and officially invited delegates to next year's conference. The presentation also included a traditional Calgary "White Hat" ceremony! Blair Mason presented Executive Director of the Newfoundland Human Rights Commission, Carey Majid, with a white hat as a gesture of gratitude for hosting the 2010 conference and in celebration of Alberta hosting next year's conference. The White Hat ceremony-a Calgary tradition with historic roots-was presented as a symbol of the hospitality delegates can expect to receive in Calgary next year. Information about the 2011 conference will be available on the CASHRA website in November 2010.
International Holocaust Remembrance Day and the 65th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz-Birkenau (Edmonton, January 27, 2010)
The Chief of the Commission and Tribunals, David Blair Mason, brought greetings from the Commission to an event organized by B'nai Brith of Canada to commemorate International Holocaust Remembrance Day on January 27, 2010. The event also marked the 65th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz-Birkenau. A screening of the film Beyond the Fence and a presentation by an Auschwitz survivor were highlights of the commemoration event, held at the Edmonton Jewish Community Centre. International Holocaust Remembrance Day remembers and honours the countless victims of the Holocaust and encourages the development of education programs about Holocaust history to help prevent future acts of genocide.
Frontiers of Canadian Migration conference (Calgary, March 19-22, 2009)
Commission staff presented two sessions at the Eleventh National Metropolis Conference, Frontiers of Canadian Migration, held in Calgary from March 19 to 22, 2009. The full-day pre-conference session entitled Justice and Policing in a Diverse Western Canada: Meeting the Challenges was presented with the Calgary Police Service and the Alberta Hate Crime Committee. The second session, Creating Change through Collaboration, presented with the Alberta Urban Municipalities Association, provided participants with an opportunity to recognize key components of success in creating welcoming and inclusive communities and combating racism and discrimination.
Pan-Canadian CMARD meeting (Calgary, March 18-19, 2009)
On March 18, 2009, the Alberta Human Rights and Citizenship Commission (AHRCC) and the Canadian Commission for UNESCO jointly hosted a reception to welcome representatives of municipalities from across Canada that have joined the Coalition of Municipalities Against Racial Discrimination (CMARD) as they gathered in Calgary for the second Pan-Canadian CMARD meeting. AHRCC was also a partner in organizing the full-day working meeting, which was held on March 19, 2009. The first Pan-Canadian meeting was also held in Calgary in June 2007.
Following the Pan-Canadian meeting, AHRCC joined with the Alberta Urban Municipalities Association (AUMA) and the Human Rights and Citizenship Branch of Alberta Culture and Community Spirit to convene a meeting of Alberta members of CMARD and other municipalities involved in building welcoming and inclusive communities. AHRCC, AUMA, and Alberta Culture and Community Spirit are members in a three-year Welcoming and Inclusive Communities (WIC) partnership to support municipalities in building their capacity to be welcoming and inclusive, and to combat racism and discrimination.
Workplace drug and alcohol seminar (McLennan Ross LLP Workplace Drug and Alcohol Programs Seminar, February 2009)
The Commission's Northern Regional Office Director, Louise Borlé, presented Human Rights Complaints: Administrative Practices and Policy Concerning Complaints of this Nature at the McLennan Ross LLP Workplace Drug and Alcohol Programs Seminar. The seminar took place on February 3, 2009 in Edmonton. Read more.
