Human rights complaints
Individuals who believe they have experienced discrimination that is prohibited under Alberta’s provincial human rights legislation, the Alberta Human Rights Act (AHR Act), may make a complaint to the Alberta Human Rights Commission. The Commission can accept only those complaints that are within its jurisdiction. The Commission provides services to resolve and settle complaints. Human rights tribunals adjudicate complaints that cannot be resolved.
- In the 2008-09 fiscal year, the Commission opened 799 complaint files.
- In 2008-09, the Commission closed 668 files.
- 97% of the complaints closed in 2008-09 were dealt with through the Commission’s complaint resolution processes
- The remaining 3% (22 files) that closed in 2008-09, closed through the tribunal hearing process.

Website visits
The website is a key information channel for the Commission.
- During the period April 1, 2008 to March 31, 2009, the site had over 280,000 visits, a monthly average of over 23,000 visits.
Alberta Human Rights Information Services (AHRIS)
The Commission produces an electronic newsletter, which provides Commission news and related information.
- There were 3,500 subscribers to this service on March 31, 2009.
Educational workshops
The Commission provides customized and public workshops on human rights in the workplace across the province. These workshops receive very positive evaluations from those who participate.
- In 2008-09, a total of 94 workshops and presentations were offered to approximately 2,014 participants.
Displays
The Commission provides portable displays accompanied by a range of resources to organizations that hold meetings, conferences and other events, to build awareness of human rights legislation and the Commission’s programs and services.
- In 2008-09, displays were hosted at 36 events and reached over 6,600 viewers.
