Access to information and protection of privacy

Personal information collected, used or disclosed by employers should be handled in a sensitive matter. Employers are required to comply with human rights law as well as privacy law.

Privacy legislation deals with the collection, retention, use and disclosure of personal information.

The Office of the Information and Privacy Commissioner in Alberta was created in 1995 and is responsible for administration of the Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act (FOIP Act), the Health Information Act (HIA) and the Personal Information Protection Act (PIPA). Visit the Queen's Printer website to access these acts.

Further information on privacy laws can be found on the website of the Office of the Information and Privacy Commissioner of Alberta.

Questions about matters that may involve both human rights law and privacy law should be addressed on an individual basis because of the complex nature of this area of law. Contact the Commission for more information.
