The Alberta Government recently reappointed Charlach Mackintosh for a three-year term as Chief Commissioner of the Alberta Human Rights and Citizenship Commission. The Alberta Human Rights and Citizenship Commission has joined schools, community organizations and public institutions across the province in planning and publicizing a variety of activities to commemorate the International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination on March 21.Through a new promotional initiative called It's Your Turn: Racism Free Alberta, Keep Your Word, organizations will present workshops, dramatic presentations, informational sessions and a host of other activities throughout the month of March. Syncrude Canada was honoured for its work in embracing diversity in its workforce, encouraging respect and inclusion, and working toward eliminating discrimination and barriers to fair employment practices. The Alberta Human Rights and Citizenship Commission presented the Diversity Leadership Award of Distinction to Syncrude Canada at the Alberta Chambers of Commerce Alberta Business Award of Distinction gala, held in Calgary on February 18, 2004. The finalists for the Diversity Leadership Award of Distinction were:  Husky Energy Inc., Lakeside Packers, and Syncrude Canada. See the list of all award winners and read the news release.

The Commission is offering workshops on Human Rights in the Workplace. March 2004 sessions will be held in Edmonton and Calgary.

Albertans joined communities around the world on Monday, March 8, International Women's Day, to recognize and celebrate the many achievements of women. This year's theme, "She's on a Role!," recognized women who have achieved great things in their community, country and around the world, through promoting gender equality and building Canada into the country it is today. Read the news release. 

The Alberta Persons Case Scholarship was established in 1979 to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the "Persons Case." These scholarships honour the efforts of five Alberta women--Emily Murphy, Louise McKinney, Nellie McClung, Irene Parlby and Henrietta Muir Edwards--who fought and won the right for the women of Canada to be officially deemed "persons" under the law. The 2003 Persons Case scholarship recipients have been announced. Read the news release.

The Human Rights, Citizenship and Multiculturalism Education Fund has announced its recipients from the October 1 deadline. Information on all recipients and their funded projects for the fiscal year 2003-2004 is also available. The next deadline for grant applications is May 1, 2004.
