Alberta's municipalities are encouraged to join the Coalition of Municipalities Against Racism and Discrimination (CMARD)

Alberta’s municipalities are uniting with cities across the globe to combat racism and discrimination as they join the Coalition of Municipalities Against Racism and Discrimination. The aim is to help build communities that are respectful, safe and welcoming. Municipalities that join the project commit to follow 10 principles related to combating racism and discrimination, as well as develop and implement an action plan, and monitor progress. In Alberta, the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo and the City of Calgary have joined the project to date.  Read the Alberta Human Rights and Citizenship Commission information bulletin.

An Alberta version of a national booklet about the Coalition of Municipalities Against Racism and Discrimination is available online. Print copies are also available.

The Alberta Human Rights and Citizenship Commission is working with the Canadian Commission for UNESCO to further the initiative in Alberta.  The Alberta Urban Municipalities Association has endorsed the initiative.

Through the Human Rights, Citizenship and Multiculturalism Education Fund, the province has provided a $25,000 grant to the Alberta Urban Municipalities Association to develop an on-line toolkit of resources to help municipalities who join the project develop action plans to combat racism and discrimination in their communities. The toolkit will be available in winter 2007.
