Message from Robert Philp, Queen's Counsel,
Chief of the Commission and Tribunals
(June 13, 2016)
The Orlando Mass Shooting
“The Orlando tragedy, where 50 people were killed and 53 injured, was committed based on hatred and intolerance, which have no place in our society.
“Alberta’s human rights legislation, the Alberta Human Rights Act, protects against discrimination based on 15 grounds, including sexual orientation, gender identity and gender expression.
“Alberta is a province that values diversity and inclusion, and Albertans recognize the richness of life that is enhanced by our diversity. We stand in solidarity with the LGBTQ community against hatred, intolerance and violence.
“We must remain committed to protecting our fundamental human rights and creating a society where all people are equal in dignity, rights and responsibilities.”
The Alberta Human Rights Commission is an independent commission of the Government of Alberta.
