Free webinar for municipalities: Duty to accommodate
Do you understand what is meant by your duty to accommodate?
- Are you aware of your municipality's responsibilities under Alberta's human rights legislation?
On March 10, 2011, the Welcoming and Inclusive Communities (WIC) Initiative will be hosting a free webinar in partnership with the Alberta Human Rights Commission. The focus of the webinar will be municipal responsibilities under Alberta's human rights legislation and, in particular, a municipality's duty to accommodate. It is open to mayors, councillors and administrators.
The Alberta workplace is becoming more diverse. Requests for accommodation on the basis of mental and physical disabilities, religious beliefs, pregnancy and family status are becoming more frequent. Employers are required to accommodate employees to the point of undue hardship.
Municipalities have a duty to accommodate in employment and in the provision of municipal services. This webinar will enable participants to gain an understanding of what is meant by "duty to accommodate" and "undue hardship."
The test established by the Supreme Court of Canada in Meiorin will be discussed, and suggestions will be provided on how to respond to accommodation needs from employees and citizens in municipalities. After participating in this webinar, mayors, councillors and administrators will have a better understanding of their roles and responsibilities under the Alberta Human Rights Act when accommodation is requested.
